Fact 1: Kaige and Kiley are the only ones who were getting paid for this expedition outside of the loot that was found in Krassus' lair. They were contracted to get the relic, not any of the others. This was established near the beginning of the arc. Try to keep up. I know it's hard when all you want to do is spout off negatives that don't really exist.
Fact 2: Kaige is not being boneheaded. His decision only affects himself and Kiley and no one else in the party. He has his reasons for not accepting payment. The girls were after information. and the hybrids were just after their guild's own relic. Neither of those two were being paid by the village.
Fact 3: One of Kaige's big shiny berserk buttons is children being in harm's way. Krassus is pressing it hard by threatening a child's life.
Fact 4: No one here likes you and you are being a nitpicky bonehead yourself. Go pester some other comic if all you ever have to say is something negative.

@GT

"I relate to the basic goodness in others, I listen to their opinions, I'm open to ideas, and I'm always committed to finding win-win solutions to problems. I'm not a fixer, but I firmly believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Okay Gabe, this is BS and you know it. You went off on me when I disagreed with you and were not open to even considering any of my counterpoints, and treated me with hostility. Heck, you got defensive and snippy with everyone who disagreed with your thoughts, whether they were being polite or rude, spouting "I have a right to my opinion and I don't need to explain myself for your understanding!" You say opinions aren't facts, and yet you are so assertive with your own that you are all but shouting "I am right, all of you are wrong". Whether or not that is your intent, that is how you are coming off, so trying to say "Don't be upset with me for being blunt, tactless, and occasionally flagrantly rude, because I'm being honest" isn't going to fly in most social communications.

Also, who says Kaige doesn't know exactly what he's doing? Yes, he's visibly angry, but that is by no means an automatic sign that he's lost all of his sense. A lot of people find focus in anger, and can think quite clearly in it. Therefore, he may well have thought his forthcoming actions through, and therefore not qualify for being called a "bonehead".

As for the child hostage incident, while you may be of the opinion that no life is more valuable than any other, many people are quite the opposite, seeing children as innocent, defensless lives that need to be protected. A lot of people are more concerned with a baby or child's life being ended that early as opposed to someone middle aged. I can't say I know exactly why, but I believe it's quite prevelent, which is why such situations appear, especially in works such as this.

Kaige and Kiley are mercenaries, and so help people in exchange for payment. They've completed their current assignment of retrieving the artifact, so they've earned that pay, though the gold hasn't yet been handed over (the sack the hybrids are carrying being loot unrelated to Kaige and Kiley's contract). Now the village is being attacked and someone has been taken hostage. That's another situation, and Kaige is being preemptive in saying that he'll take care of the situation free of charge, because normally this would likely be something he'd be paid to take care of. He's telling the vilage elder that they don't need to make another contract, that he'll resolve this situation for free, as the man would likely have soon said something regarding paying them to save her. Sure, the phrase "on the house" is generally used after, but I don't think that's enough to qualify Kaige as being boneheaded.

As for the whole "berzerk button" thing, such characteristics and foibles are common in works like this, where things are more black and white than in real life. Is it a little cliche? Maybe, but it's appropriate for the genre.

@GabrielsThoughts: Okay those comments were uncalled for and you know it. Your acting like the biggest tool I have seen. Let me guess mommy and daddy never hugged you enough. Listen no one here is a toadie. If DD makes a mistake we can tell him what went wrong and explain how he might be able to fix it. You can take your high and mighty attitude and shove it up your ass! You're not the greatest thing since sliced bread your not awesome. You're just a lowly D bag who spends all his waking moments to pester some poor guy who wants to entertain people. And I feel sorry for you.

Hello, GabrielsThoughts! Do you make your own crusts from scratch, or do you use store-bought pie-crusts?

"I actually pester lot's of comics, I've won at least three troll awards since 2005. Not to mention the fact That I am the official troll of Neko the Kitty. Do you honestly think you could eliminate, wound, or manipulate me at this point?"
I think we should all thank GT for this remark, which is about as clearly explicit an admission of Deliberate Intent To Troll as any troll is likely to produce. As I've done in previous comments, I recommend that anybody who responds to GT do so in as non-sequiturial a manner as GT's own responses. I would further recommend that people who respond to GT should attempt to do so in a silly manner. Perhaps if GT's troll-comments yield silliness/ merriment, rather than anger/outrage, GT will stop trolling; perhaps not. Either way, giving the troll what it wants is a bad idea, says I...

I'm waiting for a hero to use this logic:
"You've got this backwards, nimrod. Your continued well-being is dependent on your treatment of [hostage]. If you harm [him/her/etc], you lose your meat-shield and we have every reason to kill you."
