Indeed, heroes-for-hire would definitely come in handy in scenarios such as this. For small villages, having a full-time police force would be an inefficient use of workers. If the village is made up of primarily decent folk, they can handle any troublemakers within the community itself.

But in situations where you're facing a large, "professional" barbarian, bringing in outside help is probably your best bet.

They're a small village so they don't have or need a sherif.
